Ike & Tina Turner - The Edge - Album

The Edge contains the very last Ike & Tina recordings with lead vocals from Tina on the a-side and Ike Turner compositions without Tina on the b-side. The instrumental part was played by Home Grown Funk, a popular Memphis group in the '70s. In 1984, after Tina’s comback, all five songs with Tina have been also released on a „Mini“ album. The song Party Vibes was released as a promo in 1980 and peaked at #27 on the Billboard dance charts, while Shame, Shame, Shame was a single in 1982, featuring an extended and remixed version. Tina promoted the song on the „Willem Ruis Lotto Show“ in the Netherlands, where it reached #47 on the charts.

Liner Notes

The five selections on this mini-album were the last sessions Tina made with Ike before their tumultuous split. They’re all covers of hits from the early-to-mid-seventies. Yet Tina was never a stranger to cover versions many of her biggest hits with Ike were reworkings of others material and she always transformed them with her special magic, making them her own. Backed by lkes scratchy guitar and hard-punching band and the Ikettes churchy harmonies, Tina delivers them with all her throaty, impassioned vocal power. Her fiery rendition of Bill Withers „Lean On Me“ is of special interest, as she partially alters the original lyrics and completely changes the moody, making it into a driving gospel-style stomper. These vibrant numbers are a welcome addition to the prolific recorded legacy of one of the most intense and distinguished vocal stylists of our time.
