From the 'Foreign Affair' promotional interview

Q: And finally Foreign Affair, a Tony Joe White song again Mark Knopfler playing on here...

A: Ohhhh….I had finished basically all of Tony's songs, we were in New York there together and that one popped up and I felt "alright Tony now this is enough you know I mean c'mon I've recorded three of your songs what are you trying to do take over the album!'. And then I stopped kidding myself and I said 'Oh God, this is a European song!', I could hear it blasting on the streets of Paris, the feeling of Europe and their music is different to ours in America and I said 'Oh God, it's a beautiful song!‘ and I just said 'Get me the words, I've got to hear every line!
