IKE & TINA: Single

Ooh Poop A Doo (1964)

Ike & Tina Turner - Ooh Poop A Doo - Single

Ooh Poop A Doo was recorded live, taken from the album The Ike & Tina Turner Show (Vol. 2). The same version was also included on the flip side of the single Finger Poppin’ from 1965. Probably also the b-side track was recorded live, because it’s very raw and was also produced from R. A. "Bumps“ Blackwell, but was not on the tracklist of the album. The title track is a cover from Jessie Hill, originally released in 1960. Ike & Tina recorded also a studio version of the song for their album Workin’ Together and released this version also as a single in 1971 under the proper titel Ooh Poo Pah Doo. Tina promoted the song without Ike but together with Neil Sedaka at the TV-Show Shindig! in 1964. Additional live versions are available on the album What You Hear Is What You Get from 1971 and Live In '71 from 2004.

Unfortunately, it's not quite clear which is the a-side of this single, because it was released just in time for Christmas and the CashBox magazine reviewed the song „Merry Christmas Baby“ in it’s issue from December 12, 1964 instead of „Ooh Poop A Doo“.

Ike & Tina Turner - Ooh Poop A Doo - Single

CashBox - December 12, 1964

MERRY CHRISTMAS BABY (2:00) The vet pop-r&b duo have had hits in the past and they can score again with this top-notch Yuletide offering. Tune is a medium-paced, shufflin’ chorus-backed blues tear-jerker with a plaintive seasonal theme. Watch it closely. OOH POOP A DOO (3:17) Funky reworking of the old Jessie Hill triumph.
