Flagg Grove School was built on one acre of land given by Benjamin Flagg in 1889. This one-room African American schoolhouse began as a Subscription School offering education for grades 1-8 until the mid-1960s. Flagg Grove's most famous student was Anna Mae Bullock, better known as Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock’n Roll.
When the school was closed in the late 1960s, it was used as a barn and corn crib until being moved to the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center in Brownsville, Tennessee.
In January 2014, Tina announced her contributions to the project, including a financial donation and memorabilia from her career. Restored and opened as the Tina Turner Museum in 2014, preserving the legacy of the Flagg family and the importance of education for all people. A collection of costumes, gold records and more will be on display for all to see, at no charge.
Flagg Grove School opened Friday, September 26, 2014, with a host of media and fans on hand to dedicate the school and the museum inside. Tina Turner recorded a video for the opening at the set of the Swisscom iO commercial, in which she spoke about herself, when she was a student and her contribution to the project.
The opening and the Queen of Rock will be celebrated during Tina Turner Heritage Days each year on the fourth weekend of September.
