Good Hearted Woman was intended as Tina Turner’s very first solo album. The idea came from Jack Millman, who wanted to record a country album with Tina. She was excited about it and selected the front cover image, originally shot for an article in Rolling Stone magazine. Recordings took place in Ike & Tina Turner’s studio Bolic Sound and the finished tracks were sent to several record companies. United Artists was interested to sign Tina as a solo artist, but they rejected all tracks - but not the idea of a country album. The result was the recording of ten additional country songs with a slower mellow tempo, released as Tina Turns The Country On.
Jack Millman became the rights for the previous recorded tracks and released them for the first time in 1979, but with a different cover picture from the Acid Queen photo session. This album was reissued after Tina’s comeback under the title Goes Country and in the meantime, it's also available digitally and remixed. In 2024, all tracks have been reissued on the limited edition vinyl album Legacy and in 2025, the master tapes were re-released with the originally intended cover picture and liner notes, revealing the story of these recordings.

Most people don't think of Tina Turner as a country artist, which is understandable because she isn‘t. However, on „Good Hearted Woman“ she records a collection of country songs in her own unique style and the result is an album many country programmers and listeners will enjoy. — CashBox (November 24, 1979)
