IKE: Single

Boxtop (1958)

Ike Turner - Boxtop - Single

Boxtop is the very first single with (background) vocals from Anna Mae Bullock (Little Ann) on the title track. At this time, Anna Mae was not married with Ike Turner and there was no Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Only two years later with A Fool In Love, Ike & Tina started their career as a duo. Ike recorded this song with Carlson Oliver, another vocalist of the „Kings of Rhythm“ at his home on Virginia Place in East St. Louis. It was released locally on the St. Louis-based label Tune Town Records in 1958 and was re-issued from Secret Records in 2011 on a 10“ vinyl disc as an add-on to the compilation Jack Rabbit Blues. In 1959, Ike recorded another version in Chicago without background vocals from Anna Mae, released as the b-side on the single Walking Down The Aisle.
