Fontella Bass was born in St. Louis, Missouri on July 3, 1940 as the daughter of the gospel singer Martha Bass. Her biggest success was the song „Rescue Me,“ which reached #4 in the US and #11 in the UK. Fontella died on December 26, 2012 at a St. Louis hospice from complications of a heart attack.

In 1964, Ike Turner produced with her the single Poor Little Fool, featuring backing vocals from Tina Turner on the melodical main part. Apart from The Ikettes, it’s the only recording from Tina Turner together with another female singer in the 1960s.
