Rio ’88 is the home video release from Tina’s legendary concert at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on January 16, 1988 as part of her Break Every Rule Tour. With this concert in front of over 180,000 people, Tina broke an attendance record that landed her in the Guinness Book of World Records with the largest paying audience for a single artist.
Especially for this concert they changed the setlist and Tina opened it with the song Addicted To Love while she entered the stage on a Beija-Flor de Nilópolis float, designed by carnival designer Joãosinho Trinta. During the performance of Typical Male, Tina was accompanied by drummers, dancers and the singer of the samba school, Neguinho da Beija-Flor. Also Tina’s clothes were especially designed for this concert, which was closed with a big firework above the stadium.
Unfortunately, many songs from the original setlist are missing in this release, but some of them have been broadcasted in a TV-Special in South America and the video footage of the encore song Nutbush City Limits was used for the music video of the first German single from the album Live In Europe. The video was re-issued in 2007 on a 3 DVD Box Set and remastered in 2022 as part of the Break Every Rule (Deluxe Edition).
